So in obvious money grab news, Warner Bros. announced Monday
that effective December 29, 2011 they will be pulling all of the Harry Potter
DVD and Blu-ray sets and individual titles (including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2 which is out Nov. 11)
from store shelves.
In a stolen move from Disney, which releases certain titles
for a limited time and then locks them back up in a "vault", Warner
Bros. has given the home video collection of the potter films an expiration
date.
I'm not a fan of this type of business, but I understand
that there is a lot of profit behind it. People panic, go out and buy the films that
seal up the holes in the collection, or buy the whole series if they haven't already.
People react to things like this, and I am very guilty of
this myself, especially if it's something I really want.
I personally don't have any of the Harry Potter films, and it seems that I might find myself without,
because at this time it doesn't seem right to spend so much.
What Warner Bros. is doing with the Harry Potter series isn't right, especially now in tough times. It's
almost like they are telling fans that you need to buy now, or you won't get to
own the films for years. You don't buy now, and we punish you with a long wait.
It's always felt like a dirty, money grabbing, punishment
when Disney did it with their films, and I just hope that this isn't something
Warner Bros. will be doing with some of its better known movies, but if this
move is lucrative with Potter, I'm sure we could see more
things disappearing from store shelves.
